There’s more, a swing on the beach to forget the rest of the world and enjoy those perfect island sunsets. Keep dreaming, because this place exists and it’s in the Philippines…
PARADISE EXISTS AND IT’S IN THE PHILIPPINES
Islands have a charm all of their own and Sambawan, this is how this piece of paradise is called, is not the exception. What makes this island so special is the pristine aspect it still preserves. And the almost total absence of visitors.
WHERE IS SAMBAWAN?
Sambawan is a sub-island of Maripipi and it’s situated in Eastern Visayas, Philippines. It is located between Maripipi and Masbate islands, right in the middle of the country. Let’s have a look at the map.
HOW TO GET TO SAMBAWAN?
Reaching Sambawan is not as easy as getting to other popular islands such as Boracay and Palawan. First of all you need to reach the city of Tacloban. Depending on where you start from, you can easily fly there with Cebu Pacific or choose to reach the city by boat/bus. From Tacloban, you have two options: you can either get to Naval or to the city of Kawayan and then catch/hire a boat. Once you get on the island, there is an entrance fee of php 100 per person.
- Option 1, cheaper but longer. From Tacloban, catch a ride to Naval Port and take the ferry to Maripipi island (around php 100 per person). Once on the island, reach Ol-og and take/hire a boat from Maripipi to Sambawan the next morning (around php 200 per person).
- Option 2, more expensive but faster. From Tacloban, catch a ride to Kawayan then get the boat to the island of Sambawan (php 1100 to share).
WHERE TO STAY AND WHERE TO EAT
There are three cottages on the island where it’s possible to stay overnight. A cottage costs php 2500 per night, has three beds and plenty of space on both the first and the second floors for camping mattresses and sleeping bags. Electricity only works from 6pm to midnight, you can recharge your devices and turn on the lights. Tanks filled with fresh water are provided every day, you can leave those under the sun all day long and enjoy a warm shower in the evening.
If you’re not staying overnight, you might want to reserve an open-air cottage on the beach to ensure enough shadow. Or you can still choose to stay under the trees!
There is a convenience store on the island that sells basic needs, drinks and snacks. Also, if you’re staying there only for one night, you might opt for a dinner made of rice and eggs cooked by the people that work on the island. Anyway, the best thing to do before getting to Sambawan is to purchase everything you need. A cheap place to do that would be the supermarket “PRINCE” in Naval.
WHAT TO DO ON THE ISLAND
Relax and disconnect. Lie down on your beach towel and get a tan. Enjoy that warm feeling while listening to the sound of the sea. And when the sun is too hot, take a dip in the blue water.
Need something more dynamic to do during the day? There’s a scuba diving school on the island where you can rent the gears and go exploring the underwater life. Or, if you prefer, just hire a mask for php 150 and be surprised by the numbers of species you can see. Tunas and turtles are just around the corner!
There are no pubs on the island, but if you’re lucky enough, during the night there’s a better show. As the sky gets dark have a look at the sea as it might become luminescent. When the fluorescent plankton glows in the water, under a sky full of stars, this place becomes even more beautiful.
