Wanna travel to New Zealand and earn some money on the way? Learn in this post how to apply for a working holiday visa in New Zealand in 4 simple steps!

A Working Holiday Visa is a special visa that allows you to work and travel in New Zealand for a maximum period of one year (or 23 months if you’re from UK) and that gives you the opportunity to explore the country and earn some money on the way.

If you want to apply for a Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand the first thing you will need is a credit card as it can only be processed online on the immigration website for an amount of around NZ $ 165,00 (€ 110,00).

HOW TO APPLY FOR A WORKING HOLIDAY VISA IN NEW ZEALAND

The process is pretty fast and simple. First of all, you need to check if you’re eligible to apply for a Working Holiday Visa in New Zealand. You must:

  • Be at least 18 and not more than 30 years old (18-35 in a select few countries);
  • Not have been approved a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) for NZ before.
  • Have a passport that is valid for at least three months after your planned departure from New Zealand.
  • Hold a return/onward ticket to exit the country
  • Have at least NZ $ 4,200 (about € 2,700) on your bank account
  • Have a health insurance

*Plus, you’re not allowed to bring children with you.

Please note that the requirements may change depending on your country and, once in New Zealand, there might be other rules that you need to respect. If you’re Italian, for example, one of the most important is that you must not work for the same employer for more than three months.

Once you’ve checked restrictions and requirements you’re all set to begin the application process.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A WORKING HOLIDAY VISA IN NEW ZEALAND IN 4 SIMPLE STEPS

  1. Enter the login page of the Immigration website and create an account. After receiving a confirmation of registration via e-mail, log into your account .
  2. An “Apply Online” page will open up, scroll down and select “Working Holiday Scheme”.
  3. If the scheme for your country is open/available, select your nationality below.
  4.  Click “Apply”.

BEFORE YOU APPLY REMEMBER TO:

Read the general infos about the Working Holiday Visa;
Read carefully the information about your country;
Check if you need to submit medical certificates.

Finally, you’ll enter the Working Holiday Scheme online application system! You’ll see your application divided into 4 sections that you’ll need to complete:

  1. PERSONAL. This means personal details such as name and address, documents details and occupation details.
  2. HEALTH. General questions about your health status. (e.g. Do you have active tuberculosis ? Are you pregnant?)
  3. CHARACTER. General questions to verify if you’re an acceptable person. (e.g. Have you ever been convicted of any offence for which you have been sentenced to a term of imprisonment of 5 years or more, or for an indeterminate period capable of running for 5 years or more?)
  4. WORKING HOLIDAY SPECIFIC. Final questions e.g. Do you have sufficient funds available for your Working Holiday in New Zealand?

It only takes 10 minutes to answer all these questions, and as you finish you are ready to send the request. The approval takes a few days (my one arrived after three days) and it’s sent to you by e-mail.

AFTER YOU APPLY AND BEFORE REACHING THE AIRPORT REMEMBER TO:

Print you Working Holiday Visa;
Print your onward ticket to exit the country;
Bring proof that you have NZ$4.200 on your bank account (print your bank statement)
Bring copy of health insurance.
